The president of Ghana Mr. John Dramani Mahama during the weekend payed a working visit to the Takoradi port as part of a western region tour to acquaint himself with the progress of expansion works at the port. The expansion works which commenced a little over a year ago would add about ten additional berths to the port with about 16 meters deep draught which is expected to increase the cargo through put at the port.
The president in a speech mentioned that“the creation of 10 additional berths would triple the current capacity of the port and also help to de-congest the Tema port since Takoradi would now serve as an alternative for shippers to import or export cargo.
The minister of transport Mrs Dzifa Attivor on her part also mentioned that, the government recognizes the transportation challenges in the country and as such is taking all the necessary steps to improve the infrastructure deficits citing the expansion of the Tema port, developments of regional airports, the railway developments etc as examples of ongoing infrastructure projects.
The visit by the president was part of a two day working tour of the western region, where he inaugurated a new €23 million cement mill at the Ghana Cement (GHACEM) factory in Takoradi, payed a visit to the Aboadze Thermal Plant, inspected the 110 kilometer Apemanim-Elubo road among others.
